Wisteria floribunda ‘Domino’

Description

Wisteria floribunda ‘Domino’ was considered a cultivar (‘Issai’) of the hybrid W.x formosa ( a crossing of W. sinensis x W. floribunda) up till recently, and is still often given this name. It’s a popular and very elegant Wisteria with numerous, vivid lilac-blue flowers. The flowers are palatable, but the legumes and seeds are poisonous.

This cultivar has been know since 1940. It’s probably a natural hybrid, which has originated in Japan.

Forme

  • Port de la plante : WInds to the right (clockwise seen from above, along with the sun) with very think, woody branches after a few years.
  • Hauteur: 8 tot 15 m
  • Largeur: 4 tot 10 m
  • Force végétative : Very strong
  • Système racinaire: Sensitive to hardening and soil compactation

Feuille

  • Forme: Spiral leaf arrangement, imparripinnate compound leaves with eleven to fifteen small, elliptic leaflets. The entire leaf is about 30 cm long, the leaflets are 4-8 cm long.
  • Couleur: Vividly green, later on bronzy green
  • Couleur en automne: Yellow

Fleur

  • Forme: Small papilionaceous flowers in elegant, somewhat short (20-25 cm) terminal racemes.
  • Couleur: Pink
  • Période: May-June, together with leaf development. Often good second blossoming in July-August
  • Caractéristiques particulières: Very abundantly blossoming, blossoms at early age, little bit fragrant, palatable

Fruit

  • Forme: Fluffy hairy, slender and flattened legumes, 7-15 cm long

Tige/Tronc

  • Tige / Tronc / Écorce: Young twigs are supple and light-green, older branches are woody and can become very thick, the bark is grey-brown

Exigences de la culture

  • Emplacement : Sunny
  • Sol: Humus rich, not to fertile, well drained but humid soil that never dries out. The soil can’t contain any lime, or the leaves will turn yellow. A pH of 6,0-7.0 is ideal.
  • Zone climatique: 6b
  • Caractéristiques particulières: Wisteria blossoms on short side branches of the main branches. Annual trimming is necessary to keep the plant into it’s form and to stimulate blossoming. Guiding against horizontal ropes gives a deceleration of the sap stream and stimulates flower bud formation. Seedlings start flowering very hard or not al all. That’s why grafted plants are offered
